7de Laan is the brainchild of Danie Odendaal, who came upon the idea
for this popular soapie nearly fifteen years ago, when he was living in
Melville.
Every morning over coffee and breakfast in his favourite coffee
shop, he watched people come and go and started creating his own
imaginary suburb with a variety of characters: a stingy businessman
who loves to gossip, the manager of his coffee shop who is a beloved
mother figure, the cute and lively waitresses, an eccentric old man
who talks in riddles, and of course a villainous character or two for
good measure.
The stories pivot on the Terreblanches, a wealthy family dominated
by the tenants of a block of flats above the intimate coffee shop – a
favourite meeting place for just about everyone in the neighbourhood.
