The story of Chanukah is a gripping one. On a literal level it tells the tale of a group of Jewish priests in modern day, Israel who 2 Millennia back fought a war against the powerful Assyrian Greek army and won enabling them to rededicate the Temple in Jerusalem. On a metaphysical level it tells the story of the victory of light over darkness and the miracle of the candelabra whose light lasted for 8 days, when the oil in it should only have been sufficient for one. It is about the emancipation of a people, but also tells the story that life is sacred. As human beings, we are called upon by G-d to transcend physical limitation and thus transform the world and bring more light into it. Filmed in Cape Town, this Programme looks at a local families celebration of this festival and what meaning it has for them in the South African context.
