Nommer Asseblief

The title, directly translated as “Number please” refers to the old manual telephone exchanges found in Post Offices. Callers had to call the exchange and ask to be connected to whichever number was required. The nature of the exchanges meant that people, including the exchange staff were able to listen in on conversations on the shared lines. Grieta is the young operator working in the exchange which links up the local Café, the local Butchery, farms and various busy bodies who spend lots of time listening on conversations not meant for their ears. Hans and Belinda owns the Café and Freddie is the general assistant. Oom Fasie and Tant Kriekie are the two main characters who are destined to have a closer relationship in future. Sus Betta is the local gossip queen and prude dampening everyone’s fun. Doubtful characters come and go and one hilarious situation after the other ensue as a result of this with good always victorious over the doubtful.
