The Mating Game is the story of three women struggling with motherhood, love and friendship. The programme merges racy storylines with deftly drawn, multi-faceted characters. Set in present day Johannesburg, this series follows the lives of three very distinct women who become united in their search for love and family.
Grace (28) Kamla (34) and Sara (29) grew up in the turbulent 1980’s and entered their teenage years in the expectation filled 90’s. By the time they became friends, shifts in the social landscape have opened up possibilities for women in South Africa to compete more equally with their male counterparts.
This new layer of women is bright, independent, sexually liberated and frequently in conflict with the values of their more traditional parents. And in their long awaited bid for freedom, they have left most men scratching their heads looking to the past for self-definition. Grace, Kamla and Sara all have different reasons to want to choose a life that’s very different to that of their mothers’. By the end of the series, each of the women had redefined what it means to be a mother, in some cases by drawing on the vast experience of elders, in others, by making a break from out of date belief systems.
And as women with self-respect and a shopping list of aspirations, our three characters enter a needle in the haystack search for men who are worthy of their love. And they find them in the most unlikely places.
