Jessica Burley is a middle-aged woman (separated from her husband, Desmond) who decided to turn her large house on the outskirts of Durban into a boarding establishment for a culturally and ethnically mixed bunch of 20-somethings attending the nearby Technikon. The house becomes commonly known as ‘The Res’.
Desmond’s new girlfriend, Tammy, is young enough to be Jessica’s daughter, and she is pregnant. Desmond mysteriously disappears while on a fishing trip. Jessica is a suspect in the police case. Sharon, Jessica and Desmond’s teenage daughter, is involved in drug peddling and spent a horrific time at a drug rehabilitation centre.
The Res inhabitants and their lecturers are a diverse and interesting group: from an attractive blonde political activist to a classical pianist as well as some rugby players.
