When a poor young penny-whistler, Melody gets an opportunity to audition for a traditional Cape musical, she
discovers that she needs to defy her tyrannical father to achieve her dream. Melody has a daily routine of getting up before the crack of dawn, dressing her younger brother Junior, asking her father Eric for train fare, meeting her playing partner Bevan and endangering her life by walking through the crime infested impoverished township of Athlone, to illegally travel by train to busk on the streets of Cape Town with her precious pennywhistle. This has become the norm rather than the exception for her. She does this unselfish task to put food on the table for her and Junior, but also for her father, the alcoholic; her father Eric ends up wasting the money by buying his customary bottle of cheap wine.
