Courtroom drama has always been crowd puller, as the big crime-and-punishment series such as Law and Order and The Practice have shown time and again. But when humour is stirred into the mix, which is what the all-time favourite Night Court set about doing, the results are hilarious. Going Up also does just that – it demonstrates that South Africans of all kinds are capable of laughing at themselves, even within the serious confines of the magistrate’s court! A magistrate, a court elderly and a nasty prosecutor provide material for half a dozen major comic scenes set in the courtroom. The viewer is assured of pleasant, fun relaxation during this one, as the madcap characters put each other through their managerial paces.
