Homelands

This epic tale begins in the dusty streets of a racially integrated Fordsburg in the early sixties, where three little boys pledge their friendship in blood.

It ends in the nineties on the eve of the first democratic South African election. In those three decades the boys have grown up along paths that differ widely.

There’s Mike Slater, the ringleader of their little gang. He watched his mother die, suffering at the hands of his sadistic father, and survived years in the armed forces to become one of the most powerful men in Military Intelligence.

Johan Fourie, the asthmatic weakling, finds his feet in journalism, where his liberalism is put to the ultimate test.

And Daniel Mofokeng, the little boy who takes his first steps towards being a freedom fighter, when he finds books left after a police raid in Fordsburg.

This is a story of friendship, betrayal and loyalty set against the huge backdrop of a changing South Africa.
