Mapungubwe: Echoes in the Valley paints a radical history of
the great kingdom of Mapungubwe with influential African
men and women whose stories could not be contained in
history books. Through orature and totemic incantations, their
histories were passed down from one generation to another.
Filmmaker, Mandla Dube’s candid conversations with the
descendants of Mapungubwe give insight into a world that
has been made obscure through colonial historiography. It is
through these conversations that ‘Mapungubwean’ kingships
and customs are thoroughly unpacked.
