African Science is Sexy

This series traces the lives and journeys of our ancient ancestors through what they left behind where they lived. Investigating everything from artworks and tools to remains of food we begin to piece together how people lived. In a cave on the South Cape Coast we find surprising material evidence supporting the genetic fact that Africa was the origin of the first modern intelligent humans. In this area scientists give us clues as to why these very early people developed the brainpower to create language and culture. Through genetics we can now trace migrations of people within Africa long before colonialism and rock paintings tell their own diverse and vivid story across many millennia. Knowing the origins of the people who brought iron-age technology to southern Africa, we discover how our ancestors mined and worked metals like gold into sculptures and how they came to use ingots as currency. Other evidence tells the story of the ancient trade with Chinese voyagers. Archaeology tells us much about the colonial period and slavery too, physical evidence of how our civilization was changed forever.
